Kilts, Ghosts and a lot of history – our unforgettable class trip to Edinburgh
From March 24th to March 28th we had the opportunity to explore the Scottish capitol Edinburgh. We were accompanied by our teachers Mrs. Ortmann and Mrs. Gäth, who supported us throughout the entire trip with great dedication. The excitement was huge as we gathered at Hamburg airport. For many of us, this was the first time visiting Scotland but some were also flying for the first time. After a short flight we arrived in Edinburgh on a Monday afternoon, where a bus took us to our hostel. The first evening was free for us to explore the nearby area on our own and get ready for the exciting days.
Tuesday began with a two-and-a-half-hours-guided tour of Edinburgh. Our tour guide, Georgia, who has been living in this city for 7 years now but originally comes from England, guided us through the historical old town past impressive landmarks such as St. Giles Cathedral, narrow alleys and the vibrant city life. Immediately, we understood why Edinburgh is considered to be one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. After an individual lunch break we delved into the city’s underground history in the afternoon. During a guided tour of the Real Mary King’s Close we learned how people in the cramped streets in the 17th century lived.
On Wednesday we visited Edinburgh Castle, which is one of the most iconic landmarks. The impressive fortress stands high above the city offering not only breathtaking views but also fascinating insights into the lives of the historical Scottish kings, queens and battles. A highlight was seeing the Scottish crown jewels and other significant symbols of the Scottish monarchy. After a lunch we spent the afternoon at Edinburgh Dungeon were spine chilling stories, theatrical performances and interactive attractions brought the city’s dark past to life. The mix of entertainment and history gave us plenty of goosebump moments. Because of our free time in the later afternoon we also could go to the shopping mal, which was stunning to see with all the stores that Germany does not have.
Thursday started with a visit to Holyroodhouse, the official residence of the British royal family in Scotland. The history of Mary, Queen of Scotts, who once lived there was particulary intriguing. Afterwards we hiked up Calton Hill where we enjoyed an incredible panoramic view of the city. Additionally, after a lunch break we concluded the day with a group dinner at the Hard Rock Café – a perfect opportunity to reflect on our trip and enjoy the last evening.
Friday morning it was time to say goodbye to not only our hostel bus also the other class from Switzerland which we met there and had great talks with. After a bus ride to the airport we boarded our return flight to Hamburg.
Edinburgh captivated us all with its unique blend of history and breathtaking landscapes. What made the trip even more special was not only how much we learned but also the great time we had as a group. A huge thank you goes to Mrs. Ortmann and Mrs. Gäth, who made this trip possible and supported us with their excellent organization and not to forget their patience. This study trip will certainly stay in our memories for a long time!
And who knows – maybe we brought a ghost back with us to Germany? 😉
