Daily News item

Monday 16 March: Getting to know Boizenburg
We were assigned to go with our German students to 2 of their classes, to which afterwards we went to get lunch at a place called “Grillhaus”. We tried some new food, for example Döner or a Döner box, and had a new experience. There was some American food there, but not many people got it because we were eager to try something new. After that, we got a tour of the school, followed by a tour of Boizenburg and the surrounding area. We saw the inside of their town hall, and got to walk around through downtown and saw a church, boat docks, and lots of ducks.

Saturday 14 March: Journey & arrival

Our journey to Boizenburg started way back in Ithaca Michigan. We traveled to Detroit, then took a long 8-hour flight to Frankfurt, followed by a short flight to Hamburg. Our travels were very smooth, except our first flight was delayed because of extreme wind turbulence. The wind was so bad that we were not able to have dinner on the plane. In Frankfurt, we saw a man in security with three huge jars of Nutella. Even though the journey from home to my German hosts’ home was long and very tiring, I’m glad it went safely and everything went according to plan.

Monday 23 March: Trip to Berlin

Our visit to Berlin was definitely a highlight of the trip, getting to experience the architecture and see the history of the city was an amazing time. We started off our day with a visit to the German Parliament “Reichstag”. While there we were able to speak with Reem Alabali Radovan and learn about her life story as well as her role in the German government. After this we saw the Brandenburg Gate, once there we had time to walk around and explore different sections of the city. The group then took a bus tour to see the remnants of the Berlin Wall, the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, embassies, and several statues and monuments from the Prussian era. At the end of the bus tour we were dropped off at the Mall of Berlin where we had time to look around and shop. Overall the trip to Berlin was an incredible day that allowed us to learn more of the history not just of the city, but of Germany as a whole.
